This is an interesting rumor. It claims that the next model iPad will cost $80 more than the current one. This means the iPad 3 will cost, if the rumor is accurate, $579. We wouldn’t give this rumor much credit yet. In fact, if memory serves us correctly, a rumor like this cropped up last year as well.
The source of the rumor is a price sheet that came out of China, which was discovered by someone on the Sina Weibo, a microblogging service in China that is similar to Twitter.
If the chart that surfaced is accurate, it shows that the 16GB wifi-only tablet will run for $579, while the 32GB unit will go for $679 and the 64GB will go for $779. Meanwhile, the 3G models are also said to be receiving a price increase, but of slightly less than $70.
We’re not going to assume they’re real. Still, the rumor claims that the Retina Display will be the reason for the price increase. We’re willing to bet they will remain at their current price, and pricing may have even been a reason for the two-year wait before a Retina Display made it into Apple’s tablet.
