Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy Hands-On (Review)

 Sky Gamblers Air Supremacy

During the new iPad press event, Namco introduced the latest game in the Sky Gamblers series, Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy. While it works on all three iPad models, and the game is designed to make use of the Retina display.

The Retina display’s extra-sharp visuals truly make the game a visual experience for the iPad. It’s also a faster-paced game than some of the other iPad hits like Infinity Blade II. It feels a bit more console-like than some of those other titles as well.

The game is a bit of a challenge if you aren’t used to the air combat / dogfight genre. Needless to say … I found it pretty tough. I won’t totally fault the game for that as that has more to do with my inability to fly virtual planes than it does with how the game was made. Still, I’ve never been a fan of virtual joysticks and buttons on a touchscreen. It’s still somewhat awkward to control sometimes. The only other problem I have with this game is that my adult thumbs to now play well with it on the iPhone—not at all. This is definitely something you want to play on the iPad’s larger screen. In fact, it’s one you really want to play on the new iPad, because the graphics are beautiful and the added sharpness makes it something truly worth checking out.

You can also play online, that adds to the experience as it’s always fun to play real opponents rather than just against computer enemies.

The Verdict

The game is well made. There’s no doubt about that. The graphics are beautiful, and the Retina display really makes them shine. Be ready to crash  few times, especially if you aren’t used to this genre (If you’re a fan of games like Ace Combat, this is for you). I’d also strongly recommend playing it on an iPad, unless you have very thin thumbs.
