Exploding batteries are scary. How about batteries that balloon up to like four times their size? That’s what happened to the battery in the image above. The problem battery is the one on the right, in case you’re wondering (If the bubbling up didn’t give it away). It expanded like a bag of microwave popcorn, causing the poor little iPhone that once housed it to burst at the seams and crack.
This image comes from iPatch, a repair specialist in the UK that specializes in iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. They say that it is actually a common problem with the iPhone 3GS. IPatch told website CultofMac that they are getting “quite a few” iPhones that look like this. The force of the expanding battery is “strong enough to break plastic, bend metal and pop screws” they add.
The good news is that it doesn’t seem instant. At least we hope it’s not. People are sending their iPhones in for repairs, so chances are it’s something that happens gradually as the puzzled owner wonders why their iPhone 3GS is getting a little pudgy.
