This comes up about every month or so. We just have to talk about it for the sake of not missing the chatter and rumors. Here it goes: Apple is working with smaller iPad prototypes.
According to VentureBeat, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber spoke on podcast The Talk Show about a smaller 1024×786 iPad being tested by Apple. Gruber is a good source for Apple news, so we don’t doubt what he says, which is, “I’ve heard from multiple people that this is something that they’re kind of noodling with.”
However, he is sure to mention that it’s not known whether or not the smaller tablet will ever be released. Apple has been known to test many a products that never make it into the public eye. However, if such a device were to be released, we could count on it being smaller than the iPad and closer to what Amazon’s Kindle Fire is. Perhaps around the same price-range as well.
