The Gartner analyst group saw tablet sales grow 98 percent overall in 2012. That’s nearly double as tablets reach 118.9 million. Apple is of course still at the top of the tablet market with 73 million.
However, Gartner expects Apple to maintain their tablet lead into 2016. At that point they expect Android to close in on Apple, but the Cupertino company will likely still have the lead through the year.
The iPad is expected to maintain its lead through all that, because many just don’t see a compelling reason to go with another tablet option right now, according to the report.
Here’s a portion of the report:
“Despite PC vendors and phone manufacturers wanting a piece of the pie and launching themselves into the media tablet market, so far, we have seen very limited success outside of Apple with its iPad,” she said. “As vendors struggled to compete on price and differentiate enough on either the hardware or ecosystem, inventories were built and only 60 million units actually reached the hands of consumers… The situation has not improved in early 2012, when the arrival of the new iPad has reset the benchmark for the product to beat.”
