Apple has been long rumored to be working on a television set. Not much is known aside from the fact that the company is said to want to enter the market in some way. Many believe it will be an Apple HDTV, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek thinks he’s figured out the name. He believes it should be called iPanel.
His reasoning does make sense, but the name isn’t great. Sorry, Pete. He believes that it will be more than just a simple television set. It’s going to be more of a media center. He believes that, “It is a display, gaming center, media hub, computer, home automator, etc.”
He may be very right about the functionality. After all, it would only make sense for Apple to release a television set that’s powered by iOS, or some variation of it. This would give it compatibility with Apple’s other devices, such as the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Mac. It would make for a nice entertainment device. However, he does note that the name iPanel is owned by Crestron. They are a company that specializes in Apple-based business solutions, according to a Wired report.
Whether Apple decides to go with such a name remains to be seen, but I doubt it.
