iOS 6 Rumor: Apple Dropping Google Maps In Favor of Their Own Mapping App

According to a recent report, Apple is abandoning Google Maps for iOS 6. The new OS will feature Apple’s own mapping App. Little is known about the application, as it’s just rumor at this point. However, the reports say it’s cleaner, faster and more reliable.

Apple’s purchase of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9 mean that Apple has been creating their own mapping software. The new app will likely simply be called Maps. The app’s icon is said to be redesigned. It still features the same view of Apple’s 1 Infinite Loop Campus, but it has a new color scheme and has been redrawn, the report says.

Most worth noting, says 9to5Mac, who first reported on the app thanks to one of their sources, is the 3D mode. The application will have a 3D mode that can be enabled by tapping a ‘3D’ button within the app.

It will be interesting to see how the application compares to the current one, as I’ve never been very fond of the current app over 3G. That said, it would be nice if Apple would update the navigation as well.
