The New York Times is also picking up on the iPad mini reports, and they have talked to various people involved with the rumored tablet. That makes for at least three credible publications reporting on an iPad with a 7-inch screen.
Furthermore, the upcoming tablet is rumored to be ready for a release this year. This is another report we’ve heard. Normally, it’s easy to blow off rumors of an iPad mini. Apple said it wouldn’t happen, and most previous reports came from small-time sites or the Digitimes (which is notorious for getting things wrong) and ambiguous reports from “upstream suppliers.”
Here’s a portion of a New York Times report. Notice that they don’t say it’s probably happening, or that it’s likely to happen—they say it is happening:
The company is developing a new tablet with a 7.85-inch screen that is likely to sell for significantly less than the latest $499 iPad, with its 9.7-inch display, according to several people with knowledge of the project who declined to be named discussing confidential plans. The product is expected to be announced this year.
Also rumored is a larger Kindle Fire from Amazon. This is of course to compete with the current iPad.
