According to Jim Darlymple, and Anand Shimpi, the next iPhone won’t have NFC capabilities. Near-field communication, or NFC, is something we’ve been hearing would be included in the iPhone since long before the iPhone 4S was introduced.
Yesterday, a leaked part showed what looked like an NFC chip. Applications like Passbook made it seem all the more likely. However, some experts in the field call it very unlikely.
AnandTech wrote about it, saying that it would be unlikely based on the reported build of the upcoming handset:
Given the primarily metal backside of the new iPhone, it’s highly unlikely that NFC is in the cards for this generation. In fact, given the very little space at top and bottom dedicated to those glass RF windows, you can almost entirely rule it out.
Know that they say “almost entirely,” so it’s not impossible. It’s just not likely to happen, according to them.
