Looks like not just anyone will be able to make a lightning cable or similar connector for Apple’s new iOS devices. Someone has already taken one apart. What they found was pretty interesting. The cable has an authentication chip on the inside.
What this means is that third-party makes can’t work unless they are licensed by Apple (in which case, they would have access to the proper components). This can be annoyig for consumers who wanted to buy cheap knock-off cables or accessories from unofficial makers. However, it works for Apple in offering at least some sort of control of who makes components.
