Apple has shut down Ping. It was a half-hearted attempt at social networking on iTunes. The idea was there, but it doesn’t seem that Apple was ever all that committed to it. Perhaps they just wanted a placeholder while they worked out a deal with Facebook and Twitter.
Either way, Ping is gone. Even back in June Apple CEO Tim Cook said Ping was no longer a priority for Apple. He said, “The customer voted and said ‘This isn’t something that I want to put a lot of energy into.'”
The menu isn’t in iTunes anymore, and it seems that with the next major revision, due later this month, it will be completely gone.
