What You Need to Know About the iPad mini

iPad mini hand

Apple announced the iPad mini today. Yup, that’s what they’re calling it. It could suit those who don’t own an iPad or wanted something smaller. Maybe even those who want an iOS-based tablet, but felt the iPad was a bit too big.

Let’s take a look at what there is to know about the iPad mini.

1) 7.9-inch screen

The iPad mini has a 7.9-inch screen. The resolution is the same as the iPad 2, which is 1024×768 at 163 ppi. That’s a slightly higher pixel density than the iPad 2, which is 132 ppi. Still by no means a Retina display, or anything close to that. It’s actually equal to pre-Retina iPhone models.

2) Weight and Size

This iPad is obviously much smaller, lighter and thinner than previous models. It’s about as thick as a pencil. Schiller also said it weighs about as much as a notepad. Just a little over half a pound. Here are the specs from Apple’s site:

Height: 7.87 inches (200 mm)
Width: 5.3 inches (134.7 mm)
Depth: 0.28 inch (7.2 mm)
Weight (Wi-Fi): 0.68 pound (308 g)
Weight (Wi-Fi + Cellular): 0.69 pound (312 g)

3) Battery Life

The Battery life is comparable to previous iPad models. That’s 10 hours over wifi watching video, listening to music or surfing the web. It’s 9-hours over cellular.

4) Connectivity

The iPad mini has wifi 802.11a/b/g/n capability and LTE. Here are some of the specifics, also taken from Apple’s site:

5) Processor

The processor looks to be the same dual-core A5 that powers the iPad 2.

6) Colors

The iPad mini will come in black and white. This is the same as before, but now it more closely matches the iPhone 5 in that the white will have the aluminum back and the mini black will have the charcoal-colored look.

7) Pricing:

As before, the iPad comes in six prices depending on your configuration. It starts at $329, and goes up to $659 for a 64GB iPad with 4G capabilities.

16GB – $329

32GB – $559

Is the iPad mini for you?

Is the iPad mini the right size for you? It’s smaller than the current iPad, so it’s easily more portable. It fits in one hand. That’s what some were looking for in an iPad. It’s definitely priced a bit higher than other small-form tablets. It will be interesting to hold one and see how it feels in the hand, though.
