Installing the iOS 6.0.1 Update

The iOS 6 may have been released, changing the entire make-up of the mobile platform, but it is not going to stop there.  As with any major iOS update, there will be incremental updates that follow to keep the software up to date.

These sometimes fix bugs with the original update; add small new features, or tiny additions to the new array of iOS features.  They could, on the other hand, even include major additions that are coming on their own and do not warrant inclusion in the major yearly release.  The newest iOS update has come already with the iOS 6.0.1 download.  Here is a look at how to install the iOS 6.0.1 update and what new features are included for your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

One nice thing about the newer iOS formats is that you can download and update your iPhone without actually plugging in to your home computer.  If you want to download and install the iOS 6.0.1 update, start by going into your Settings.  Go to General, which is at the top of the third block of options right above Sounds.  You will see Software Update right under About, and there will be a number to the right if the iOS 6.0.1 update is waiting.

When you select it you will see an indication of what iOS update it is, a line about what is included, and a link to Learn More about the iOS 6.0.1 software.  This will allow you some detailed information about the update you are about to do.  Below that will be a button to install the update, which you can press to begin the process.

You will next be asked to read, and agree to, the Terms and Conditions associated with the iOS download.  When you hit Agree it will begin verifying the update, which will take a few moments.  The screen will then go black as it processes the update, then giving you the classic silver Apple logo with a progress bar so you can watch as it installs.  It will then restart the device, with the iOS 6.0.1 firmware in tact.

There is also the more traditional format for updating the device.  You begin by plugging your iPhone, or other iOS device such as an iPad, into your Home computer.  Open up iTunes and then select the iPhone from under the Devices heading in the left hand panel.  Go into the Info tab and select the button for updates.  This will initiate the exact same process where you will be asked to read and agree to the Terms and Conditions.  It will then download to your computer and then sync over to your iPhone rather than downloading directly to your iPhone.

The list of new features is not incredibly long for the iOS 6.0.1 update, and it is focused more on repairs.  There was previously a bug on the iPhone 5 that occasionally stopped software updates from working wirelessly, which has now been fixed.  It will also fix a bug that allowed for horizontal lines occurring over the keyboard, one that froze the camera’s flash in the On position, and one that affected the Passcode Lock and made it less secure.  It improved the use of WPA2 W-Fi networks for the iPhone 5 and the fifth generation of the iPod Touch, as well as consolidated the Use Cellular Data for the switch with iTunes Match.  There had also been some recent issues with the iPhone having consistent access to cellular networks, which has been fixed in this new version.

It should also be noted that the iOS 6.0.1 download is not available to all iOS devices.  Those iOS devices that were not allowed to update to the iOS 6 are still not available with the iOS 6.0.1 software, which includes the first generation iPad.  There are no new devices left out, however.
