Most of us knew that the iPad has a strong hold on the tablet market, but we may not have thought about how strong of a hold that is. Well, a research firm called IDC has done a bit of figuring out the numbers, and here’s what they found.
The iPad sold 22.9 million units in the 4th quarter of 2012. That’s one quarter. The holiday season sure helped Apple there. However, the holidays weren’t as kind to the rest of the tablet market. Samsung sold 7.9 million tablets, Amazon sold 6 million (their Kindle Fire line) Asus sold 3.1 million and Barnes & Noble, makers of the Nook, sold 1 million. “Others” totaled at 11.6 million. Together, that’s 52.5 million tablets sold in Q4 with Apple making up a huge chunk.
Looks like they did well. Some may remember that the majority of after-Christmas tweets from tablets came from iPads.
