The iTunes Store is still the most popular means of purchasing music online, according to the NPD group.
In the US, 44 million people downloaded a digital song or album in 2012.
iTunes made up 63 percent of all digital music downloads in 2012, says the report. That’s far ahead of the competition. The closest rival is Amazon’s MP3 service, which holds a 22 percent share of the digital music market. That’s not bad considering how long iTunes has been around, and its userbase. Amazon is also said to be gaining ground, it grew 50 percent from 2011 to 2012.
Apple’s service is definitely at the top of the download game. It’s been around for so many years that it’s become familiar for users.
