Corning recently announced its Lotus XT glass. While the company’s Gorilla Glass is known for being ultra-durable, this glass substrate is designed to actually go within the display to support the components of the phone that make a touchscreen a touchscreen.
According to the announcement, the component is cheaper than before, which may not exactly translate into savings for the consumer, but at least we know that those costs can go into other components, making those better.
Furthermore, it can mean better quality visuals on our displays. If the components can be made thinner, it also means thinner phones and tablets overall. You can watch the video to learn more about the glass and the procedure.
Perhaps we will see it in our next iPhones.
