Ear Monsters’ 3D Audio Makes For a Different Kind of Game

ear monsters

This game definitely looks worth checking out. It’s called Ear Monsters for iOS. It’s $1.99 on the App Store. It’s interesting because it uses 3D audio.

The developers used some kind of process, that, when played with headphones, the game seems to be happening around you. The game throws sound at the player along a stereo field. However, it simulates how things sound when they are happening around you. For instance, if something is happening to your left, you will hear it in your left ear. While that sounds simple enough, somehow, the developers created an effect in which it actually seems to have depth rather than just playing back in stereo. Perhaps they built delay and reverb algorithms into their sound engine to make it feel as if things are near or far, right or left and so on.

The video above is a good example of how it works. It’s really pretty cool.
