VLC Media Player Returning to App Store Soon

VLC player iPad

VLC Media Player, which left the App Store about three years ago is back. It’s added a few new features, such as Dropbox integration, the ability to download files from the web and more.

The app was available years ago, but was pulled from the App Store over some sort “complex” issue. According to website Ars Technica, it went down something like this:

All versions of VLC were then open-source and licensed under GPLv2; the App Store imposes its own licensing and DRM restrictions on apps. One of VLC’s original developers, Rémi Denis-Courmont, claimed that thelicensing policies did not mesh and filed a complaint against the app. It was shortly removed.

The app is available in some territories, and should hit the US sometime tonight.
