Apple’s latest desktop operating system, OS X Mavericks is seeing a lot of downloads. Much of this is likely because it’s free. Still, it’s leading to a lot of upgrades, and users are buying more software for their Macs and iPads because of it.
Some users may have still been stuff on Snow Leopard, and this didn’t give them a lot to work with as far as new OS X features go. However, many of those folks were able to upgrade to Mavericks for free. That’s a first for Apple, though it does offer iOS upgrades for free and has for some time.
Meanwhile, use of older versions of Mac OS X is declining. Again, making it free gives people a lot of incentive.
