Matrix Audio Qube Hands-on (Review)

The Qube speaker by Matrix Audio is a small speaker designed with portability in mind. It’s a 1 1/2-inch cube with a small approximately 1-inch cone.

The Qube connects to any device with a headphone jack. this makes it very universal. You can plug it into your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android device, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, just about any portable device, really. It’s louder than any of those, and sounds fuller than the stock speakers built into your iPhone or iPad.

The Qube won’t blow the paint off the walls when you turn it on, but that’s not what it’s meant to do. It’s the kind of speaker you can carry in a pocket or purse. You can plug it into your iPhone and place it on your desk while you listen to music or Podcasts.

While it works just fine for music, we feel that its strongest application is spoken word (such as Podcasts) or movies (with Apps such as Netflix.). They are ideal, because they allow you to hear everything while not being too loud.

One of the best things about the Qube is its solid construction. It’s made of aluminum. It won’t be easily damaged, because of its build. That’s noticeable immediately as you remove it from the package, because the Qube is a bit heavier than it looks. You won’t be afraid to drop it, aside from a fear of maybe scraping off the nice little paint job if it takes a hard hit against a concrete sidewalk.

We charged the Qube (via included micro-USB cable) and got several days worth of on and off use out of it. We’d easily believe the 8-hour playtime specified on the box. It also comes with a nice little carrying pouch. Within the pouch is a pocket for the charge/headphone cable. The pouch will keep the speaker and its cable together, so it’s easy to pull it out of a bag or purse anytime you need it.

The Qube is a nice speaker if you don’t mind physically plugging it into your device. That said, the headphone jack offers versatility that you may not get from a Bluetooth-only accessory. There’s a trade-off, but it’s perfect for listening from the comfort of your desk, picnic or nightstand.

If you’re looking for a cute little gift for the techie in the family, the Qube is definitely a good place to start.
