New Video Shows Market Shares and Profits for Cell Phones from 2007 to 2011

John Dvorak, a tech writer, that mobile phone consolidation was heading in the direction of two dominant players: Nokia and Motorola. With this in mind, Horace Dediu has created a video and posted it on Asymco with a subtitle of “The evolution of Shipments, Revenue, Profitability and Cost structure of eight vendors selling mobile phones between second quarter 2007 and second quarter 2011.” At least it is animated with funny music in the background.

iPhone Beats Out the Android in Usability Tests

In a new study, Harvard’s Human Factors in Design lab looked at the usability of different smart phones to see what ones favored best, and both Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft’s Windows phone beat out Android and the Blackberry in ease of use. This does not, however, put the iPhone on top as the Windows phone favored best in the trials.

Patent Wars: Google Purchases a Thousand Patents from IBM

A thousand patents have now been purchased from IBM by Google, which is an effort to insulate them when litigation comes for infringement. Google was only the holder of 700 patents, which is miniscule to most cell phone based companies who have thousands just in a specific field.

According to data from Informa Telecoms & Media, Android-based tablets will be nearly caught up to the iPad in 2015. Based on their predictions, Android tablets will be at 87 million sales while the iPad is at 90 million.
