  • The Verizon iPhone was a rumor for the first four years of the device. While AT&T had a commercial monopoly over the device, users from other carriers desperately hoped that the king of all smartphones could be ported over to their plans so they could stop pretending that the Blackberry and Android were in any way comparable. When the iPhone 4 was finally released on Verizon, sales shot through the roof. It served to reason that AT&T would still be the main supplier of the iPhone 4 since it was available for a full eight months before the Verizon iPhone 4 and already had a slate of people that were already committed to the iPhone and were resigning contracts with it. Even with this the current numbers put 32% of iPhone 4 users with Verizon, a number that nobody could have imagined would be so high when it was given by the research company Localytics.

  • The iPod Touch has largely been considered the lesser iDevice from the three, standing far behind the iPhone and iPad in terms of usability and features. The differences between the iPhone and iPod touch are actually somewhat profound in that in its current incarnation the iPod Touch lacks phone calls, constant Internet connectivity, text messaging, and even hardware elements. The iOS 5 is going to bring in iMessages, which will be an Internet based text-messaging feature that will allow texting between iDevices. This will cover the iPod Touch for communication for much of the mobile market, but it still depends on a solid Wi-Fi connection to allow for this. This may be why many people are suspecting that the iPod Touch 3G, or possibly even the iPod Touch 4G, is right around the corner.

What this would mean is essentially an iPhone 4G, or at least a device that is working faster than the iPhone’s current 3G network. The chances that the iPhone 5 will be an “iPhone 4G,” or at least an LTE phone, is not likely from what we have seen through rumors and releases. The argument is now being made made by people, such as GigaOM, that this is not going to hinder the popularity of the iPhone 5 in any substantial way.

  • The rumors have been proven true and Verizon has taken their iPhone to the dark side.
The tiered data plan has been an assumption for the Verizon iPhone for months now, especially since AT&T did it previously and has made it stick. Much of the original excitement for the Verizon iPhone, besides the better coverage area, was this unlimited data plan that many newer AT&T customers have missed out on. Now Verizon has finally given up this edge and given into commerce, a story that is not that surprising.
